Student Life

Cascadilla attracts students from a wide geographic area. In 2004–05, students came from six states and five other countries. 30% of our students are boarders; day students and adult ESL students make up the rest of the School population. Seventy percent of the students are juniors, seniors, and postgraduates; unlike many private schools, Cascadilla is interested primarily in students who are planning to be at the School for one or two years. The accelerated program works best when the students have the emotional maturity to establish goals and work toward them. Most freshmen and sophomores are day students.

Daily Life
Most students have 5 hours of academic course work between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. All students and faculty members share a common lunch period. The afternoon program varies from day to day and may include physical education; special courses such as SAT preparation through Kaplan, photography, drawing, and driver's education; and opportunities to get extra help or tutoring. After dinner, evenings typically involve study, recreation, and a movie or TV.

Boarding and General Facilities
The two dormitories are designed to bring together the elements of a family environment, college life, and apartment living. Single and double rooms are available, each with its own refrigerator; each dormitory has a snack kitchen and a TV lounge. Supervision is provided by dorm parents, and college students also live in the dorms. The School tries to create a living environment that reinforces its academic programs. Since Cascadilla has no formal dining facilities of its own, most students use the dorm facilities for breakfast and take the fourteen-meal option of the Cornell University Meal Plan for lunch and dinner, though a twenty-one-meal option is available. This daily exposure to the university helps them to become familiar with its programs and facilities.

Weekend Life
The School sponsors movies and occasional parties. There may also be ski trips that include transportation, instruction, and rental of equipment. In addition, as is true of extracurricular activities during the week, students may take advantage of the wide range of opportunities at Cornell and other local schools and colleges.

Extracurricular Opportunities
Most extracurricular opportunities are available through the university and the community. The area is rich in cultural events that range from lectures and plays to musical performances of all types.
