College Counseling
As a longtime college preparatory school, the Cascadilla School prepares students for all sorts of colleges and universities and is committed to closely assisting and guiding students and their families through the college admissions process. Cascadilla School’s college acceptance record is excellent. As soon as a student enters Cascadilla, our advisors and teachers help choose an appropriately challenging class schedule and give advice on pursuing extracurricular activities and taking standardized tests. As these are important parts of a Cascadilla student’s life, they are likely to become key components in their eventual application to college.
We use many resources at Cascadilla to help students successfully apply to college. Our college counseling team includes advisors, teachers, the Academic Dean, and the Head of School, and works closely with students throughout the college application process. Our advisors keep up to date with new admissions trends, current testing requirements and deadlines, and regularly contact college admissions offices when it is necessary to present and discuss each student’s individual strengths with them.
The counseling team helps students create a list of colleges to which they will apply and helps with research on colleges and majors. Our team works closely with individual students to identify their interests, talents, and strengths, and then to match those strengths to an appropriate range of colleges for the student to explore in depth. To research colleges, Cascadilla students use our own college resources library and resources available at Cornell University in addition to doing research online.
Cascadilla’s English and writing teachers work closely with each student coaching and inspiring them as they write – and rewrite – their personal essays for college applications. The faculty will work one-on-one to help students discover their life stories and ambitions and then write effectively about them. In our small classes, teachers get to know individual students well enough to serve as their champions in describing their strong points in letters of recommendation.
In addition to individual counseling, there are special talks and meetings for juniors and seniors. Students have the opportunity at local College Nights and during visits from college representatives to ask questions and discuss college programs and admissions procedures.
The college admissions process does not end until the spring of the senior year when students make their final selections of the colleges they wish to attend after graduation.
