Student Life
"I genuinely feel that without the creative, educational and personal freedom I was given by Cascadilla, I could never have developed into the person that I am, able to make the decisions that have brought me to the place I am at now." - A Class of 2003 Cascadillian
In this area of the website, you can learn about student life at Cascadilla and about the Cascadilla experience. Being a Cascadilla student can be rewarding, challenging, and fulfilling. Intellectually stimulating, our small classrooms provide both academic learning and life lessons. The daily routine of learning in class, enjoying extracurricular activities, and interacting with teachers and other students helps Cascadilla students develop their own individual perspectives on life. It is a strong Cascadilla tradition for older students to act as counselors and role models for younger students.
"I love Cascadilla because it forces you to be a genuine person and drop your tough front - it rocks!" - C.L. (A Cascadilla Student)
Whether it’s stargazing in astronomy, throwing clay in the pottery class, building a medieval siege weapon in physics, hearing Old English in history, interacting with visiting authors and poets in English, Cascadilla provides rich and varied classroom experiences.
"This is a wonderful school. Teachers are so inspiring and motivating for the students." - M.M. (A Cascadilla Student)
But student life at Cascadilla goes beyond the classroom. Eating a meal in Collegetown, walking over to see Cornell University’s science labs or to use their library system, and hiking, skiing and swimming in the beautiful Finger Lakes of central New York provide valuable new experiences for Cascadilla students.
"When I’m at Cascadilla, I feel like I’m with a big family." - M.H. (A Cascadilla Student)
International students at Cascadilla get a truly global experience as they interact with other international students and American students. Field trips take students to New York City or other cities nearby: Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Toronto, Canada. Although Cascadilla’s dorms house boarding students, about 60 percent of Cascadilla students are day students who live at home and commute to campus. Day students are active in all the school clubs and activities. The amount of time day students spend on campus is an individual decision. Some spend the whole school day at Cascadilla; others choose to go home to study after their last afternoon class.
