World Languages
Studying another language gives students a natural way to develop a multicultural outlook by providing an insider’s view of other cultures and other ways of thinking and living. It builds up English vocabulary and strengthens knowledge of both the structure of language and how it is used. The study of a second language is indispensable for the college-bound student. The Cascadilla School offers study in three languages: Spanish, French, and Latin. As each of these languages provides it own unique knowledge and challenge, students can select the language that best suits their needs.
Modern Languages
While the study of a second language has been an important part of a Cascadilla education since 1876, it is even more important in today’s global economy. The Cascadilla School today offers instruction in the modern languages of both Spanish and French. Emphasis in these language courses is placed on speaking, reading, writing, and understanding the spoken word. The beginning levels focus on acquiring vocabulary and basic grammar and on developing an acquaintance with another culture. Upper level courses work on grammatical reinforcement, proficiency in speaking, and literary skills.
Classical Languages
Through a program of courses in Latin (an important gateway language and the original form of Spanish and French), Cascadilla is also able to offer students an opportunity to read and interpret a classical language. The study of a classical language provides a solid foundation in language study and real insights into reading English and writing persuasively and precisely. Beginning students develop the basic language skills and read simplified stories in Latin. Students will also become aware how the Latin language and ancient Roman culture have greatly influenced our own modern lives. Students who especially like learning about words and where they come from will find that Latin can be a fun and satisfying challenge.
Graduation Requirements: One credit in a language other than English is required for a Regents Diploma from the Cascadilla School. Three credits in a language other than English are required for a Regents Diploma with Advance Designation.
